Riding Umling La: What It Actually Feels Like to Take a Royal Enfield to 19,024ft (From a Brit Who’s Done It)

I left Hanle at half seven in the morning. Still dark, bit of ice on the hotel windows, tea from a flask, and the Royal Enfield Himalayan ticking over in the cold like it always does, steady, patient, and unbothered.

By the time the sun cleared the eastern ridge, I was already above 19,000 feet.

I am Darren Waite, a Midlands rider with forty-odd years of touring behind me: Scotland, Norway, all of Europe more than once on my mighty Royal Enfield Hunter 350. I thought I had a decent handle on what adventure riding actually means.

Umling La at 19,024 feet is the pass that reminded me I did not.

If you are planning your own motorcycle adventure in India, these guides are worth reading before you fly:

What Is Umling La?

The Highest Motorable Road in the World

Umling La is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of eastern India, built by the Border Roads Organisation in 2017 to connect the remote border villages of Chisumle and Demchok near the Line of Actual Control.

From 2017 to 2025, Umling La officially held the Guinness World Record as the highest motorable road in the world.

At 19,024 feet, it stands:

  • Higher than Everest South Base Camp
  • Higher than most civilian airstrips
  • At nearly half the cruising altitude of a commercial jet

In 2025, a nearby road over Mig La at 19,400 feet officially overtook the record. Even so, Umling La remains the most famous and most accessible extreme-altitude motorcycle route in Ladakh.

Why UK Riders Are Obsessed With Umling La

For riders from the UK, Umling La represents something beyond normal touring.

This is not the Lake District.

This is not the Alps.

This is one of the harshest and highest roads on Earth.

For many British riders, reaching Umling La on a Royal Enfield is the ultimate motorcycle bucket-list experience.

The Route to Umling La From Leh

How Far Is Umling La From Leh?

Umling La is not a simple day ride from Leh.

The journey covers roughly:

  • 260 kilometres from Leh to Hanle
  • Around 90 kilometres from Hanle to Umling La and back

Most riders stop overnight in Hanle before attempting the summit ride early the next morning.

Popular Route Taken by Riders

The standard riding route follows:

Leh → Karu → Upshi → Chumathang → Nyoma → Hanle → Umling La

Why Hanle Is Important

Hanle sits at roughly 4,500 metres and acts as the final acclimatisation stop before the summit push.

It is also home to one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world.

From Hanle, the final ride to Umling La via Photi La usually takes two to three hours depending on road and weather conditions.

What the Road Conditions Are Actually Like

Gravel, Loose Rock and Thin Air

The route is not smooth touring tarmac.

Large sections involve:

  • Rough gravel
  • Hard-packed dirt
  • Loose shale
  • Steep inclines
  • Broken mountain roads

The final 20 kilometres before the summit are the toughest.

At this altitude, the road is not the only challenge.

The thin air affects both rider and motorcycle performance.

Permit Rules for Foreign Riders

Because Umling La sits near a sensitive border zone, foreign nationals require Protected Area Permits.

Rules can change frequently.

Thankfully, I rode with Royal Bikers, who managed the permits, route planning, and official clearances on my behalf.

At Umling La, an experienced local tour operator is not optional.

It is essential.

What Riding Umling La Actually Feels Like

The Moment Altitude Hits You

I had already ridden Khardung La the week before at around 17,582 feet.

I thought I was acclimatised.

I had Diamox.

I had spent several days in Leh.

I was hydrated and sleeping properly.

I believed I was ready.

Then, about 10 kilometres before the summit, I stopped to adjust my glove strap and suddenly felt dizzy just from standing still.

At sea level, your body ignores small physical movements.

At 18,000 feet, every movement costs energy.

The oxygen level is dramatically lower.

Your body notices everything.

Riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 at 19,024ft

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 handled the altitude surprisingly well.

Its fuel-injected liquid-cooled engine performs far better than older carbureted motorcycles in thin air.

Even so, the loss of power is obvious.

The final climb becomes slow, controlled, and patient.

You stop trying to ride aggressively.

You simply focus on reaching the top smoothly.

Suspension and Stability on Himalayan Roads

The Himalayan’s suspension setup becomes incredibly valuable on Umling La.

With loose rock, uneven surfaces, and broken patches of road, a normal touring motorcycle would struggle badly.

The Himalayan stays stable, predictable, and calm even in difficult terrain.

Altitude Sickness at Umling La

Common Symptoms Riders Experience

Altitude sickness is real at Umling La.

At 19,024 feet, oxygen availability is drastically lower than at sea level.

Common symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Breathlessness
  • Nausea
  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue

Some riders feel mild discomfort.

Others feel severe symptoms within minutes.

Why Riders Do Not Stay Long at the Summit

I stayed at the top for roughly twelve minutes.

That was enough.

I took photographs, greeted fellow riders, watched the BRO soldiers fighting the freezing wind, and began descending immediately.

Nobody stays at Umling La for long.

The altitude does not allow it.

Morning rides are strongly recommended because afternoon winds at the summit can exceed 80 km/h.
